Over 5,000 years ago, in ancient India, scholars studied the intricate forces of life that caused wellness and illness and wrote their exhaustive learning and discoveries of health into books called the Vedas. Ayurveda, as all the writings are called, is more than a medical system in that it laid out a complete “Science of Life.” In fact, in Sanskrit, “ayu” means “life,” (made up of four essential parts: mind, body, senses and soul) and “veda” means “knowledge.”

The fundamental learning in Ayurveda is that we are all part of the world, in mind. Body, Senses and spirit and that in true nature, our existence, wellness and illness is governed by Nature’s laws and forces called the TRIDOSHAS.

Just like animals, plants and the planets exist in harmony and balance with nature, humans need to live in harmony with the forces and laws of nature to create health and balance in our lives. If the forces are imbalanced, either from outside natural causes, or by negative things we do to disrupt our ‘balance,’ we become ill. The Ayurveda teachings prescribe volumes of treatments to restore ‘balance,’ health and well-being that are all natural and of the earth. They treat the Whole person, not just the specific imbalance and include diet and nutrition yoga, stretching, massage, slow-breathing, meditation. An important part of the treatment is the use of potent fruit, plant and mineral extracts to re-establish balance, to offset the impurities in the body and restore health state.

Ayurveda states that every individual is unique in makeup, but all draw our characteristics from 5 Primary Elements: space, air, fire water and earth. It is the different mix of these that makes us each different, and how we deal with the world’s forces of nature and balance. Treatments are suited to particular type of doshas.
